Car Olympics Anyone?

There should be an automotive olympics. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying that. When the Olympics were invented sometime in 776 BC, I’m betting that the only reason they wanted to see who could run the fastest was because the car hadn’t been invented yet. Maybe they set up the whole event in anticipation of the day when giant robots would be ferrying us around and keeping our togas clean. Well that day is here, so it’s time to stop watching Kenyans in spandex jump into a sandbox and start watching Ferraris drop the clutch at 5,000 rpm. Best of all, in the car olympics there is no segregation by sex! These are equal opportunity sports, where the only thing that matters is talent. I’m exited about this idea. Hit the jump to see a breakdown of the events I had in mind…

First off, a couple of rules:

1) For each event, a country can only select one car to compete in that event.

2) Competing cars have to hail from their home country. Honda is Japanese even though they have factories in the US, and Bugatti is French even though VW owns them. The reasoning here is that athletes pull this trick all the time by training in one county and representing another, and nobody gets bent out of shape over it.

3) Drivers also have to hail from the country they are representing.

4) Cars have to be homologated by selling something like 100 – 200 versions to the public. This keeps things relatively level and stops F1 cars from entering.

0-60 – The ultimate classic. Will Bugatti reign supreme?

1/4 mile – Of course.

Top speed – The final determiner between the SSC Aero and the Veyron.

0-60-0 – Something with real-world importance, and a great show of all around ability.

Slalom – Will the high strung Ferraris rule here, or will an unexpected challenger win the day?

60-0 – Let’s see exactly what carbon ceramic gets you over cast iron.

24 hour race – Exactly like Le Mans, whoever goes the farthest wins.

I suppose we can also include an oval event for the NASCAR fans…

Now imagine all these events not only in summer, but also the winter edition! Ice racing anyone? How many bar room bets would the car olympics solve? All of them. Your welcome. So anyone with a spare airfield and a few dozen supercars, hit me up. It’s time to get this party started!

Sound off in the comments with which events you would like to see in the car olypics.
