F.A. Porsche Has Died

Posted on 05 April 2012 by Adam Kaslikowski

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche – F.A. to his friends – has passed on today; he was 76. The grandson of company founder Ferdinand Porsche and son of then company president Ferry Porsche, F.A. went on to design the companies second mass market car after the 356 – the Porsche 901. The 901 was a radical departure from the 356, but it contained classic lines and simple shapes. The 901 is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful automobile shapes in history, and much of that comes from the designs simplicity. F.A. himself said “Good design should be honest” and honest the 901 was.

For those not in the know about Porsche history, after some convoluted legal wrangling by Peugeot the 901 became known as the 911. So today we mourn the designer of an automotive icon. The Porsche 911 has survived for 7 generations, participated in and won more motorsports races than any car ever, and is plastered over countless bedroom walls at this moment.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche will be buried in the family grave at Schüttgut in Zell am See, attended by his immediate family. An official funeral service will be held in Stuttgart at a later date. Godspeed F.A., the world would be a very different place without you.
